The Baskett come from west of the Omo Valley, the territory between Dime country and the district of Gofa. They are agriculturalists, who live in small kinship groups and grow teff, maize, ensett, millet, coffee and wild cardamom as cash crops. They live with their animals on the higher ground, partly to avoid the hyenas living in the lowlands.
Their music is made up of flute and voice in a dynamic choral form. Layered harmonies and syncopated vocal rhythms from the main choir, anchor the melody of the pipes over which rides the solo female voice.
